So, in this detailed review, I will look every aspect of this book in a simple way such as its structure, content quality, what the book actually offers, where it works well, where it falls short and which type of aspirant can benefit from it.

How Is Objective General English by SP Bakshi Structured?
One of the things I like about this book is its structure. The book divides the English syllabus into four major parts, and each part contains units and chapters. This structure gives you a clear, step by step path to follow instead of putting grammar, vocabulary and comprehension topics together without any order.
1. Part A: Foundation Module
In this part, grammar concepts are explained from the basic level. These topics are covered
- Parts of Speech
- Tenses
- Modals
- Kinds of Sentences and Clauses
- Articles
- Active & Passive Voice
- Idioms & Phrases
- Spotting Errors
- Sentence Improvement
- Selecting the correct sentences
Easy examples and practice questions are also given after every topic so that you understand the concepts well.
2. Part B: Verbal Ability
Vocabulary section is kept in this part which seems to be the weak point for many aspirants.
- Paronyms & Homonyms
- Synonyms & Antonyms
- One Word Substitution
- Foreign Words with Expressions
- Sentence Completion
- Cloze Test
This section makes the book more useful than a grammar-only book.
3. Part C: Sequence of Sentences & Comprehension
Reading comprehension consumes a lot of exam time. Many students fail to finish their papers due to slow reading skills. Examiners wants to test your reading speed and also check your logical arrangement skills.
This part focuses on comprehension and sentence formation to strengthen your English skills.
- Sequence of Sentences
- Objective Comprehension
4. Part D: Practical Grammar
The final part covers additional grammar topics that are useful for objective English preparation. It includes
- Narration
- Synthesis
- Transformation
- Punctuation
- Spelling Rules
- Contractions

What Makes SP Bakshi Objective General English Useful?
a) Simple and Clear Structure
The most special thing about SP Bakshi’s English book is how each chapter is built. It starts with a short summary, then explains the grammar rule in simple language, and finally gives you revision exercises and exam style questions to test yourself. This structure clears up most doubts on its own.
The author also shares smart tricks and shortcuts. You use these tricks to to solve questions faster, which helps you save valuable time during the actual exam.
b) Strong Concept Clarity
The grammar rules in this book are explained in simple and easy language, which makes every concept easy to follow. This makes it a particularly helpful book for Hindi medium students or anyone who does not come from a strong English background.
C) It Covers Grammar and Vocabulary Together
This book includes practically all the topics that are asked in any competitive exams. Each topic also gets explained with decent depth. So, you do not need separate books for grammar and vocabulary. That makes it useful as a central English preparation book.
d) A Huge Question Bank
Instead of only focusing on concept building, it also provides revision and exam practice exercises as part of the chapter structure. Every chapter comes with two to three practice sets, and each set contains more than 50 questions. This gives you plenty of questions to test yourself what you just learned.
e) Exam-Oriented Questions
The practice questions in this book align well with SSC, Banking, and Defence exam patterns. This means you can use a single book to prepare for multiple types of exams without needing separate resources for each one..

What could have been better?
No book is perfect, and Objective General English has some limitations too.
a) No Full-Length Mock Tests
This book gives you plenty of topic-wise practice sets but it does not have full-length mock tests. Mock tests are essential for time-based practice. It helps in improving accuracy and speed.
b) Lack of Updated Exam Questions
This is probably the biggest drawback of this book. Some of the examples given in the book seem a bit outdated, especially when compared with the recent SSC exam pattern or latest IBPS papers. The newer editions have improved this to some extent, but it still lags behind how fast real exam patterns are changing.
c) No Digital or Video Support
Many modern books now come with QR codes, video explanations, or access to an online course. Still, Objective General English sticks to the traditional printed book format. It doesn’t provide digital support. This is a helpful feature for aspirants doing self-study, which is not there in this book.

My Personal Suggestions
How to Use SP Bakshi English Book Effectively
- Follow the Chaper Sequence: The author arranges all chapters in a highly logical sequence. So, if your basics are weak, start from Part A and move ahead step by step. Do not skip directly to the practice tests. You must build your basics first. A structured approach makes revision much easier later.
- Maintain a Grammar Notebook: You do not need to copy entire chapters. Note down any important grammar rule or exceptions that confuses you. This notebook can become extremely useful before the exam.
- Practice Daily: Practice grammar and vocabulary for at least 30-45 minutes every day. Consistency here builds a strong habit over time.
- Solve PYQs Separately: This is something I strongly recommend. After completing a topic, solve previous-year questions of that topic from your target exam. This will keep you exam-ready.
- Revise weekly: Go back to older chapters every week for both grammar and vocabulary. This keeps everything fresh in your memory.
- Pair it with mock tests: Do not wait until you finish the book. Start taking topic tests and sectional tests during preparation. Later, move towards full-length mock tests. This will help you to improve your accuracy and speed.

Objective General English book works best for aspirants who are:
- learning English basics
- SSC aspirant and want to strengthen their grammar.

Final Verdict: Is SP Bakshi Objective General English Worth Buying in 2026?
Yes, if you are at beginner or intermediate level then SP Bakshi’s Objective General English still ranks as one of the most trusted traditional books for grammar and vocabulary preparation. Its biggest strengths are organised structure, broad topic coverage, grammar explanations, vocabulary section and large amount of practice material.
However, if you are already at an advanced level or preparing for exams with a modern pattern and descriptive English sections, this book alone will not be enough for you.
So, if you are preparing for SSC or another objective English exam and prefer learning from a detailed physical book, SP Bakshi Objective General English still remains a decent option in 2026.
Overall, I would give the book 4.2 out of 5.
